Welcome to our Parish web site. We are a Roman Catholic community in the fabulous 10-county wide Diocese of Venice in Florida, which was founded by Most Reverend John J. Nevins on October 25, 1984. Bishop Nevins refers to the Archdiocese of Miami, where he was ordained bishop six months earlier on March 25, 1984 as The Pearl of the South. He refers proudly to our diocese as The Diamond!
Our lovely old Southwestern Florida location is Punta Gorda, a Spanish name which means Fat Point. Our older sister city is on the country of Belize. Were historically famous for the landing of Ponce DeLeon in our beautiful Charlotte Harbor, with breathtaking sunsets on the Gulf of Mexico and great fishing and boating on the Peace River. In the year 2000, Punta Gorda, Florida was ranked by national Internet poll as the Number One Place to Live in the United States. We love it here and hope you will visit us. Our weather is gorgeous and the people are the friendliest anywhere!
Ponce DeLeon just may have discovered the Fountain of Youth on our shores when he brought the Catholic faith to the Gulf Coast. Our church, Sacred Heart, has maintained the Catholic presence in our area since 1929. Located in the very center of the charming old town, we like to say that The Heart of Punta Gorda is Sacred! We are conveniently located where U.S. 41 is divided North and South. For your convenience, Directions are just a click away!
As of April 7, 2004, our worshiping community has 2,167 registered households united in the love of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Our highest expression of faith is the celebration of the Eucharist. Whether you are a parishioner or a visitor, all our welcome at the table of the Lord at Sacred Heart! Our parish family expresses His Love and Grace in beautiful ways. Our work with the poor, through a veritable army of parishioner volunteers, is legendary in the Diocese, but (by reputation) throughout the United States. Be sure to visit our section on the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Our Pastor is Father Jerry Kaywell who is a nationally known Retreat Master. He is also a recording artist, composer/producer and musician. To learn more about him, you can visit www.fatherjerry.com.
